What is polypropylene (PP) material?

Polypropylene, also known as polypropene, is a synthetic thermoplastic. For us at Rope Store, polypropylene usually means plastic fibers that have been spun and braided or twisted into ropes and lines. The material has a low density, which means that products made from polypropylene weigh very little in relation to their volume.

Characteristics of polypropylene

An advantage of a polypropylene rope is that it floats. It does not absorb liquid, which means it retains its original weight even when used in marine environments. Other properties of polypropylene products are that they withstand chemicals such as acids and bases. The material also has a smooth surface.

Unlike ropes made of natural materials, a polypropylene line cannot rot or mold if stored in damp conditions. An untreated polypropylene fiber is degraded by the sun's UV radiation over time, which is why ropes intended for outdoor use are often made from UV-stabilized material.

Areas of use for polypropylene ropes

Since the material floats and repels water, polypropylene ropes are well-suited for marine use, but we also see several other areas of application.

  • Marine life: We often recommend these lines as heaving lines, towing lines, and life-saving lines.

  • Construction and industry: They are used as pulling lines and for barriers, as the material has a low price tag and withstands dirt and chemicals.

  • Everyday use: For private use, we see PP lines used for everything from tying down tarpaulins to securing loads on trailers.

Braided or twisted rope?

When you choose ropes from us, you will see that we divide them into braided and twisted cordage. Both constructions share the material's basic properties, such as floating and repelling water.

  • A braided polypropylene rope is flexible, retains its round shape, and is well-suited as a pulling line or heaving line.

  • Twisted polypropylene lines are typically three-strand, which makes them easy to splice (braid into themselves) and provides a traditional structure that is often preferred for mooring or simple barriers.

How to maintain the material

With proper handling, your polypropylene products will last longer. We recommend rinsing the lines with fresh water if they have been used in saltwater or muddy environments. Dirt that penetrates between the fibers creates friction, which wears the rope from the inside.

When the ropes are not in use, store them in a dark and dry place to minimize exposure to sunlight, which prevents the material from drying out and losing its tensile strength.
