Laid rope
Ropes are made in two different ways: 'laid' (twisted) or braided. In this category, we have gathered all the 3- and 4-strand laid ropes in our assortment. Laid cordage is the oldest technique for manufacturing ropes, hawsers and twines. Laid cordage is usually cheaper, more flexible and easier to splice compared to braided ropes. We offer everything from high-performance ring-spun reinforced spun polyester to affordable ropes made of polypropylene.
Laid cordage has multiple uses in construction, theater/film production, marine, industry and agriculture. The rope's natural stretchability makes it suitable as anchor lines, as stiffer ropes can easily snap. Laid cordage is also used as mooring lines for everything from small recreational boats to professional shipping. It is also used as hoist lines in theater, pull lines in construction and industry, lead ropes for horses, dog leashes, manure ropes, tow ropes, railings, barriers and much more.
Laid cordage is made by 'laying' (twisting) two, three or four strands into a rope. A strand is a part of the rope and is made by twisting yarns together to form a solid strand. The strands are then twisted in the opposite direction to create a hawser. A thick 4-strand hawser often has a core (loosely laid rope) running in the middle. Nowadays, most ropes are manufactured by machines, allowing for the production of long pieces without having to splice the rope. In the past, the length of the ropewalk determined the maximum length of the rope. A 100-meter rope requires a ropewalk approximately 200 meters long.
We offer a wide range of laid cordage, both in natural materials and synthetic fibers. Below is a quick overview of the different materials and more information can be found on each category page.
Polyester is the best choice if you want a strong and durable rope. Polyester has high tensile strength, withstands most chemicals, does not rot, is resistant to acid, retains its strength when wet, has good dielectric resistance and is highly resistant to sunlight. Polyester is pleasant to handle and more flexible compared to other materials.
Polypropylene (PP) is the cheapest material for rope manufacturing and is ideal if you're looking for a simpler rope. Polypropylene ropes come in several qualities and have a wide range of uses. PP has moderate tensile strength and is slightly more elastic compared to polyester. Polypropylene is characterized by its ability to float in water, its lightweight and its resistance to most chemicals and acids.
Polyamide (PA), also known as nylon in swedish, was the first synthetic material used in rope manufacturing. Polyamide has similar properties to polyester but with slightly higher tensile strength and more stretch, which provides better shock absorption. UV resistance is good, as is chemical resistance. The elongation at break is about 40% compared to polyester, which is around 20-25%. Nylon ropes should not be used as pull lines or in power station work due to their poor dielectric resistance.
Natural fibers are the materials ropes were made from before the introduction of synthetic fibers. Ropes made from natural materials are still very popular today because they have an attractive appearance, are environmentally friendly, compostable and pleasant to handle. Hemp ropes and manila ropes are still used to some extent in marine applications, mainly on wooden boats and historical vessels, to create an authentic atmosphere. The ropes have inferior resistance to moisture, UV light and abrasion compared to synthetic ropes.
Banister ropes are ropes used for enclosures, barriers at restaurants and public spaces, rope railings, staircase railings and rope fences. We have Sweden's largest selection of ropes for railings and enclosures, as well as a wide range of rope fittings designed for rope railings. The banister ropes are made of durable, UV-resistant materials that are pleasant to hold.
Marine ropes include products used on sailboats, motorboats, wooden boats and maritime shipping. We have everything from full hawsers for larger vessels to pre-spliced mooring lines and fender ropes.
Special products refer to ropes developed for specific purposes.
