Marine

Ropes, rigging and mooring lines.

Here we have gathered twisted rigging that can be used for marine applications. Twisted rigging was historically used for all applications in shipping; however, following the introduction of braided rigging, twisted rigging has been phased out from use in the rigging. Even today, manila, hemp, Tarline and Hampex are used as rigging on classic ships and wooden boats. In today’s modern sailboats, motorboats, fishing boats, etc., twisted rigging is primarily used for mooring, anchoring and fishing.

Mooring and anchoring: Here we have gathered rigging that is well-suited for mooring everything from smaller motorboats to large commercial vessels and sailing ships. If you have a wooden boat or old-fashioned vessel, we have several ropes that visually resemble real hemp or tarred hemp. Of course, we also have real hemp, both tarred and untarred.

Twisted rigging is particularly well-suited for mooring and anchoring as it is more flexible and stretchable compared to braided rigging. The ability to stretch allows the rope to better absorb "shock loads" that can occur in rough weather. An anchor line also needs good stretchability to avoid breaking when hauling up the anchor. The load on the rope is significantly higher in water than above, which means you need a rope with high breaking strength and stretchability.

We also have a large selection of pre-split mooring lines and anchor lines. The mooring lines come ready and are available with a spliced loop, thimble, hook, rubber spring, or metal spring. The rubber and metal springs relieve the rope and make it more resistant to heavy pulls and jerks. The anchor lines come ready with a spliced polyamide thimble.

Sheets & halyards: Wooden boats and traditional sailing vessels still use twisted rigging for the rigging today. Twisted rigging is not as supple and easy to handle as braided rigging, but it has the traditional look and character that many desire. Hampex, Hempline and Clipper are all products designed to resemble hemp and tarred hemp but with the advantages of synthetic fibers in terms of breaking strength, UV resistance, moisture resistance and abrasion resistance.
