Product Description:

Sail needle handcrafted by W. Smith & Son in England. The sailmaker's needle is cast in one piece from high-quality steel. It features a triangular needle head with rounded edges to create a smooth seam. The triangular shape makes it easier to penetrate tough materials like sailcloth, canvas, upholstery, leather and similar fabrics. The needle has a relatively large eye for easily threading the twine. The sailmaker's needle is often used in conjunction with a sailmaker's palm to increase force and reduce strain on the hand. The size increases with a lower number; needle #16 is suitable for most types of work. Generally, a larger needle is used for sewing multiple or thick layers of fabric, while smaller needles are used for finer sewing tasks. It is advisable to use the smallest needle possible that is still sufficient to penetrate the material.

Examples of application areas:

  • Sewing tasks in sails and sail repairs
  • Sewing clothes and textiles made of cotton and wool
  • Various sailor tasks, knots, tagging, splicing, etc.
  • Sturdy needle with a large eye for tough materials like canvas, cloth, vinyl, soft plastic, wood, cork, bark and leather
  • Perfect for heavier sewing tasks.
